– The Sacred Ancestor

Introduction

Dracula. Alucard. The King with Red Eyes. The Great One. Shinso. The Traveler in Black. The God of Nobility. Him. With so many names, the Sacred Ancestor is truly an enigma amongst all the characters, including D, in Hideyuki Kikuchi's critically acclaimed novel series Vampire Hunter D. Reader's of the series may know him as the progenitor of the entire vampiric race of Nobles, worshipped as a God by the latter and who also happens to be the father of both D and Twin D as well as other failed Successes with a motive of creating a future for the declining race of Nobility for which he travels around and carries out accursed experiments (A product of which are both D and Twin D). However, a question that can always appear in the back of any reader's mind is that, "Who is Sacred Ancestor?", as in exactly who is he?. Is he just another Vampire modeled after "Bram Stoker's Dracula" with a background twist of being the oldest Vampire and a progenitor of the entire race of vampires? Or is there more to it?. The following blog post will analyze and explain the nature and existence of the Sacred Ancestor with information from the series itself.

Appearance

Throughout the novels, the Sacred Ancestor has shown to have different appearances. For instance, in Tyrant's Star novel, when D meets him in King Minos' Labyrinth, the Sacred Ancestor had a visual depiction of a black shadow with aristocratic features.

Tyrant's Star Quote
The lid of the coffin opened slowly. Once it’d finished, a shadowy figure sat up. Under the circumstances, that was hardly strange. However, the mere act of sitting up sent out a howling air that was terribly weird and unholy.

The shadowy figure shook violently—perhaps this showed the turbulence of his mind. A pale hand reached out from the shadow’s chest—his right hand. The great ring on his little finger gave off gleams of gold. The back of his hand had a single tuft of black hair, which lent a touch of ferocity to his aristocratic elegance. From the third joint up his forefinger moved, beckoning the Hunter.

– Chapter 2, Tyrant's Star Parts 3 & 4

Another depiction of his appearance comes to us in Tale of the Dead Town where he was described as a beautiful man similar to D and had a dark aura around him.

Tale of the Dead Town Quote
“When I let that man on two hundred years ago, I never in my wildest dreams would’ve thought something like this could happen,” the mayor muttered. “That was the biggest mistake of my life.”

“He was standing at the foot of the Great Northern Mountains, all alone. When we had him in the spotlight, he looked like the very darkness condensed. Now as a rule this town doesn’t take on folks we just meet along the way, but it might’ve been the way he looked that stopped us dead in our tracks. There was a deep, dark look to his eyes. Come to think of it, he looked a lot like you.”

“As soon as he was aboard, he came up here to the deck and looked out at the nocturnal wilds and rugged chain of mountains for the longest time. And then he calmly turned to me and said, ‘Choose from the townsfolk five men and five women of surpassing strength and intellect, that they may join me in my travels.’ Of course, I had to chuckle at that. At which point he laughed like thunder and said, ‘Agree to my offer, and your people will know a thousand years of glory. Refuse, and this town will be cursed for all eternity to wander the deadly wilds."

– Chapter 1, Tale of the Dead Town

Another appearance of The Sacred Ancestor comes to us in the novel Mysterious Journey To The North Sea where he is described as a Traveler in Black who was able to destroy the rule of Nobility in Cronenberg as well as destroy the accursed sea monsters which helped the people of the region to live and prosper.

Mysterious Journey To The North Sea Quote
“This is how the legend goes. One day, a man with more power than even the Nobility came on a ship, brought all the Nobles together in the square, and upbraided them for their cruel misdeeds. When the angry Nobles mounted their battle chariots and charged the man, he not only blew away their war machines but also ripped their very homes from the ground with a single flourish of his cape. It’s said that the frightened Nobility, with one exception, all fled the area then.”

“And that one exception?”

“His name was Baron Meinster. He was the administrator of this region and the very worst of the Greater Nobility, the blackest cancer Noble blood ever produced—in fact, there are records that show making the sea creatures monstrously large and the ‘game’ of putting all the humans in one place so the Nobles could feed on them were both his ideas. A truly loathsome portrait of him survived. And letters have been preserved where his fellow Nobles wrote to acquaintances in the Capital, telling them not to go to his home if invited because even Nobility were known to enter and never come out again. At any rate, he alone defied the commands of the mighty traveler. The battle came the day after the other Nobles left, and it took place at Meinster’s castle. After a conflict that reduced the homes of the Nobles to rubble instantly, wiped out all animal life, and even changed the shape of mountains, Meinster was defeated and his corpse was cast into the sea for all eternity after measures had been taken to ensure he would never return to dry land again. It’s said that even now he prowls the bottom of the deep sea with arms folded, coming up at times to bask in the moonlight and take his sustenance, plotting his return to the land and vengeance against the traveler in black. But that last part is nothing more than legend."

– Chapter 4, Mysterious Journey To The North Sea: Part 1

Now, one may ask "What is so special about these appearances?". Here is the thing, these are all Avatars of the Sacred Ancestor and not the True Form of The Sacred Ancestor. Why do I say that these are just the Avatars of The Sacred Ancestor? This is because of crucial information regarding the existence of the Sacred Ancestor in the novels. The Sacred Ancestor was implied to have been destroyed and vanished thousands of years ago. In Novel 1, it was stated that Sacred Ancestor was reduced to dust and seemingly destroyed when he failed to gain Mina the Fair 10,000 years ago which would mean that he was destroyed in around 2,090 A.D.

Vampire Hunter D Quote
“Seeing the grueling battle she gave me the other night, never giving an inch, has only increased my ardor. Ten thousand years ago, was there not the case of our Sacred Ancestor failing to attain a human maiden of his heart’s desire?” As he said this, he gazed with reverence, equal to what any of the Greater Nobility would show, at the colossal painting occupying the wall behind him. “I have heard that the woman our Sacred Ancestor desired was named Mina the Fair, and she lived in the ancient Land of Angels. And it seems our Sacred Ancestor found the blood coursing beneath her nigh translucent skin sweeter and more delectable than any to ever wash across his tongue, though he had already drunk from the life founts of thousands of beauties.”

“Because of that woman, our Sacred Ancestor was reduced to dust,” Larmica added coldly, giving her father a plaintive look that wasn’t at all like her.

– Chapter 5, Vampire Hunter D

Moreover, in that very same novel in Chapter 8 during the final fight, Count Magnus Lee states that he had to beg the Sacred Ancestor to teach the very same trick D pulled off. Thing is, Magnus Lee is 3,757 Years Old whereas Sacred Ancestor was destroyed 10,000 years ago. Therefore, Magnus Lee has met the Sacred Ancestor during the former's early years which implies that Sacred Ancestor was alive at that time despite his apparent demise over 10,000 years ago.

Vampire Hunter D Quote
Without letting up in the slightest on the unspeakable pressure he brought to bear four inches from the weapon’s tip, D twisted both hands to one side. The Count didn’t go sailing through the air, but the end of the blade snapped off. The broken tip still between his hands, D leapt back ten feet.

“Why, that’s the very same trick … ”

It was truly grand the way the Count sent out his cape even as he shouted this, but the difference between being the one doing the trick and the one on the receiving end in this case became the difference between life and death. The tip of the sword flew from D’s folded hands in a silvery flash that neatly knifed through the heart beneath that black raiment.

For a few seconds the Count stood stock still. Then the flesh on his face began to melt away, and his eyes dropped to the floor, trailing optic nerves behind them.

Mere moments after he hit the floor, his rotting tongue and vocal chords forced out his final words.

“I ... I had to beg our Sacred Ancestor to teach me that very same trick ... Could it be ... Milord, are you truly his ... ”

– Chapter 8, Vampire Hunter D

Furthermore, Noble V: Greylancer novel also supports this when the narrator states that the Sacred Ancestor vanished during the dawn of the Nobility. Moreover, Laria also mentions that Sacred Ancestor disappeared from sight 6100 years ago which would mean he disappeared in 900 A.D.

Noble V: Greylancer Quote 1
“It has been six thousand one hundred years since the Sacred Ancestor disappeared from sight. His influence was bound to fade.”

– Chapter 7, Noble V: Greylancer

Noble V: Greylancer Quote 2
During the dawn of the Noble civilization, with which Greylancer was unfamiliar, the Sacred Ancestor had vanished, leaving behind an enormous computer to advise the Noble leaders in his place. Kept inside the inner chamber of the Privy Council Ministry, this Ultimate Mind continued to bestow the Nobility with the words of the Sacred Ancestor to this day.

– Chapter 9, Noble V: Greylancer

However, it was shown that Sacred Ancestor was still present and alive such as in the end of the Greylancer novel as well as in Twin Shadowed Knight, Raiser of Gales, Tyrant's Star, etc novels. Moreover, there are various mentions of him being alive and active in novels such as Pale Fallen Angel, Pilgrimage of the Sacred and the Profane, Demon Deathchase, etc. to name a few. Therefore, from these, it can be assessed that while the Sacred Ancestor was implied to have been destroyed, it was only limited to his Physical Form. As a matter of fact, the Sacred Ancestor was shown to be alive and present Physically when he fought the Elder God, Clulu, 10,000 years ago in Fortress of the Elder God which would put it at somewhere around 22nd Century or 2100 A.D. while he was stated to have been destroyed around the same time in Novel 1.

Fortress of the Elder God Quote 1
“Once, this whole region was a ‘playground’ for the Nobility,” D began to explain. The name had survived into the present day, but all who knew how it’d actually been in antiquity had since turned to dust. All that remained of the original Playground was part of a research facility that was also a shrine. Ten thousand years earlier, the Sacred Ancestor’s troops had come down on the Nobles who controlled the region. They smashed through the net of defenses, until about three hundred surviving Nobles were left holed up in some ruins. Though they were outnumbered and outgunned, they had something else on their side: faith.

– Chapter 2, Fortress of the Elder God

Fortress of the Elder God Quote 2
“The Nobility succeeded in calling forth gods. That much is certain. When they first attacked this place, the Sacred Ancestor’s army had thirty thousand men—but they were wiped out in a day. By nothing short of the power of a god. It’s said the only one to escape was the Ultimate Noble, Grand Duke Valcua. If left to its own devices, their god surely would’ve conquered the world. But it wasn’t perfect. The day the Sacred Ancestor himself took the field, it allowed him to make it this far, then squared off with him. Just thinking about what kind of battle took place behind those doors gives me goose bumps. After the contest, they say the Sacred Ancestor went to sleep for a hundred years. Apparently it took quite a toll on him.”

– Chapter 4, Fortress of the Elder God

The final nail on the coffin is hit when it was stated by Lefty himself that all accounts of the destruction or death of the Sacred Ancestor are simply rumours which heavily implies that while the Sacred Ancestor may or may not have been destroyed, he is still present in the current time period.

Nightmare Village Quote
“Mixing human beings with Nobility?!” Josette cried out incredulously.

“But given there isn’t anyone who’s fueled the rumor mill like this guy, I don’t think his efforts have paid off. Maybe he keeps experimenting in vain even now.”

“But the Sacred Ancestor has long since—”

“Yeah, there are a number of rumors he was destroyed. But there’s no proof any of ’em are true. That’s why he’s a legend.”

“Wait a minute. If the Sacred Ancestor’s still alive, how do you explain the Nobility going into this slide for the last three thousand years?” Bligh inquired.

“That’s why I’m not saying he’s alive, either,” the hoarse voice countered. It carried a faint laughter. “Dead or alive? Whatever the case, what you see is probably no more than an illusion of the Sacred Ancestor. Hell, it might be the Nobility’s whole civilization is one, too.”

– Chapter 3, Nightmare Village

To recap, The Sacred Ancestor was stated to have disappeared or destroyed thousands of years ago but it was in fact just the destruction of his physical form or the Avatar in which he appeared to the Nobles, Humans, and Mutants in the novels. Throughout the novels, he is shown to be alive and appears in many places as a Voyager, a Traveler, a Cruel Scientist, a Saviour, a Monk, and so on. You might question that this just may be a case of him using a "Resurrection" ability which allows him to come back to life, however, there is more to that and this is where his True Form comes into play.

Origin and True Form

The true form of Sacred Ancestor is rarely shown, let alone fully, throughout the novels. However, there are bits and pieces of his appearances in many novels that can be used to deduce his true form. A glimpse of the true form of Sacred Ancestor is shown in the novel Raiser of Gales when he appears in front of D in the abandoned Nobility mansion atop the hill.

Raiser Of Gales Quote 1
Suddenly, the sky clouded darkly. Even the sound of the wind died sharply.

D’s right hand stretched for the sword on his back.

The courtyard was no longer the courtyard.

With every inch of his body, D felt it rising into being.

His immediate vicinity was pitch-black. Allowing not even light itself to pass, its density was comparable to that of a black hole. But as incredible as the density of the darkness was, it was several orders of magnitude lower than the presence that stood before D, blocking his path.

D sent all that density right back at the presence.

“I should have expected as much. You did well to resist it, a disembodied voice said disinterestedly. It wasn’t praise. This was something the meaning of which was beyond words. Anyone else would have been crippled by this point, their psyche physically crushed. You certainly are a success.”

– Chapter 6, Raiser Of Gales

Raiser Of Gales Quote 2
“Why did you do all these things?” The strictly serene query bore an infinite weight of grief.

"In the pursuit of possibility. There were more ten years ago. But it all ended in failure."

“And do you intend to erase them, as you did all those young lives?”

"It’s not my habit to leave failures around, the presence said in conclusion. His final word on the matter was spoken with silence, but was all the more frightening for its import. I shall dispose of all the genes of darkness. You can watch to make sure, if you wish. You’ve seen a great many things. A few more shouldn’t pain you."

While he listened to the presence, D half-closed his eyes. He was changing this being that possessed the density of infinitely compacted darkness into a form like his own.

That was his only chance of victory.

Of course, this was totally unrelated to the actual physical form of his opponent. D would only cut down the form made manifest to him—that was the extent of it. Somewhere within D, a gigantic, powerful figure was moving toward completion. An image of the Sacred Ancestor, wrapped in a black cape, a pair of fangs jutting from the vermilion lips chiseled into his pale skin.

The instant it was complete, D focused all of his physical and mental energy into the sword racing from its sheath.

Light cut the darkness.

With the sunlight of midday showering down on him, D thrust his blade into the ground and clung to it almost like a crutch as he got to his feet. The heavy shadow of fatigue clung to his beautiful countenance.

“Looks like he’s taken off,” he said, even his breath ragged. He was answered by a quavering voice.

“You scare the hell out of me. That you could wound him . . . your own . . . ”

– Chapter 6, Raiser Of Gales

The Sacred Ancestor is described as a presence that is infinitely compressed darkness whose mere presence is enough to crush the psyche of anyone standing in his vicinity. As a matter of fact, the Sacred Ancestor does not even possess any physical form as his true form is that of a non-corporeal entity who is very likely non-existent due to the fact that not even D, who could cut through non-corporeal, non-existent, and abstract beings and things, was unable to interact or attack the true form of the Sacred Ancestor.

The idea of Sacred Ancestor being some sort of a Dark Non-Existent entity was explored again in Twin Shadowed Knights when D meets him in his Dream World where he is described as a presence devoid of substance and stated to not exist at all and that the presence D is viewing is a product of D's illusions. Moreover, the Voice of the Sacred Ancestor is also stated to be Non-Existent and it is in actuality what D is hearing is what the latter wants to hear.

Twin Shadowed Knights Quote
D was walking across a vast expanse of clouds in an unfamiliar place. He had passed out. This was the world he was seeing while unconscious—he knew it was a dream. He was walking. But where was he headed? He wasn’t at all concerned about what might be happening to his physical self. He knew that this place, where Menda had brought him, was the entrance to Muma. It would have defenders. And they wouldn’t stand idly by when someone reached the entrance. Menda had most likely been given this ability while in the service of the great one. Who that was, D must’ve surely known.

On the sea of clouds, a titanic lozenge-shaped structure could be seen. It seemed as if it might be reached in a few steps and at the same time as if he might never get there.

“There’s a gate,” his left hand whispered, but was that just part of the dream? “Beyond it is Muma. But first, you’ve gotta unlock the gate.”

D halted, but not because what his left hand said had alarmed him. Something stood between him and the gate. While it was a presence devoid of substance, D could still distinctly sense its weight, its density.

"So, you made it this far?" he heard a voice say. It wasn’t a sound ringing out to tremble against his eardrums, but a voice nonetheless. "I suspected you, of all people, might. Still, it is truly remarkable."

“I’m going. Don’t try to stop me.”

"I’d never do anything of the sort. To begin with, I’m not even here. What you feel here is no more than an illusion spun by your own senses. You sense me because you want to, and now you’ll try to slay me yourself. It’s an exercise in futility, D."

D resumed his strange trek. Beneath his feet, the clouds swirled fiercely, surging up all around him.

"This voice, too, is nothing save what you yourself wish to hear. In other words, it is nothingness. Muma might well be the same, D. And you, and the whole world too."

D felt the presence drawing nearer by the second. And yet, it too was probably no more than a product of his own will. The real question was whether or not he himself thought this was pointless.

"This is all in vain. You should turn back."

D’s right hand went for the hilt of his sword.

– Chapter 4, Twin Shadowed Knights

Sacred Ancestor being a non-existent entity or presence is also heavily implied in two more novels of Vampire Hunter D which are Noble V: Greylancer & Undead Island where the Nobles meet him as they are able to sense an overwhelming presence before them. But despite the superhuman sixth senses of the Nobles which allows them to detect anything no matter how small, how far, or how metaphysical they are, the Nobles felt as if the presence does not exist at all.

Undead Island Quote
Suddenly a different presence had come into being close to the trio. Judging from its position, it had undoubtedly entered through the doorway, but even that thought didn’t occur to the other three due to how truly overwhelming the presence was. Yet when they tried to learn anything more about the new arrival, they couldn’t sense a thing. While the owner of the presence was there, they also couldn’t help but feel he also wasn’t there.

– Chapter 7, Undead Island

Noble V: Greylancer Quote
It was a deep voice that resonated across the council chambers. Whence had the voice come? Not one Noble directed his attention toward the Ultimate Mind.

The Nobles all looked off in different directions. Heaven and earth.

Their bodies trembled, a phenomenon brought about by the mysterious voice.

It can’t be…

Would they utter the name that they had only several occasions to utter in a lifetime?

It can’t be…

“Someone has indeed tampered with the Ultimate Mind. Vice-Chancellor Pitaka, perhaps you discovered the operations manual I left behind.”

Such a sublime voice. This was no doubt the voice of a missionary from the depths of space.

“It is as you say,” acknowledged Pitaka, making no attempt to protest.

There was no outcry toward this admission. The Nobles present felt nothing yet sensed the presence of something extraordinary.

The voice continued, seeming to rain down over them from above. “Vice-Chancellor Pitaka, you have acted treacherously against my will to serve your self-interest. Thus the earlier ruling is null and void. The Frontier will remain under the discretionary powers of the overseers, as it always has. With regard to the war against the OSB, so long as the aliens contend that their invasion is the will of their god and believe that it is just, we must not yield an inch. This is my bidding unto you.” The Nobles present bowed their heads in silence. “The rest I leave in your hands. The treachery revealed here today is regrettable. However, the reality before us remains. There is but one path for us to walk.”

“Sacred Ancestor.” It was Greylancer who spoke up. “Whence have you come? And whence will you go?”

There was no answer.

The Nobles recognized that their venerated ancestor was gone. They stared vacantly as if the presence had retreated again to an unknown place, drawn back to the void inside their hearts. Hidden behind their blank faces was a childlike excitement at having laid eyes on the great man.

– Chapter 10, Noble V: Greylancer

Moreover, in Scenes From An Unholy War, Sacred Ancestor was described as a colorless and formless entity that drove even the Darkness mad and who came from the same stream as time implying possible higher dimensional attributes. Furthermore, when confronting D in that very same Novel, he outright states that Time means nothing to them implying both Sacred Ancestors and D are unbound from the influence of Time.

Scenes From An Unholy War Quote
And then in a section of the wilderness where death alone lay, the moonlight shone down and the wind blew in feeble sobs. Time passed, irrespective of death, and when a presence appeared, it seemed to come from the same stream of time. It had no form, no color; it was merely a presence, so tremendously large it covered the wilderness, driving the darkness mad and making the moonlight sing a requiem for the dead. The presence seemed to creep over to Toma’s remains.

– Chapter 6, Scenes From An Unholy War

Scenes From An Unholy War Quote
D came out of the bushes. He rapidly closed the gap. His eyes and handsome features showed no murderous intent as he gazed at the scene before him.

“Wait,” he heard a voice say. It came from the sky.

D turned around. Something enormous loomed before him, deeper than the darkness. It was clearly a giant. D could make out boots the size of a house, firm ankles, and muscular calves. The kneecaps and thighs that should’ve been above this were one with the darkness of the distant void.

"D!" it called out. "It’s been a long time since I saw you last. No, strike that. After all, time means nothing to us, doesn’t it?"

– Chapter 8, Scenes From An Unholy War

The Sacred Ancestor being an Omnipresent Entity was implied heavily from the Quote above in Noble V: Greylancer, but was stated to be present everywhere (Existence) and nowhere (Non-Existence) at the same time by Dorleac in Bedeviled Stagecoach novel and directly stated by the Sacred Ancestor himself in The Tiger In Winter novel.

Bedeviled Stagecoach
“The surest way is to dispose of whoever created the doppelgänger. However, that’s difficult. Another way is to give them a certain medicine.”

“And where do we find it?” Louise asked, the color draining from her. In her dreams, she’d resolved to do away with D, but in reality Louise wanted nothing more than for D to be saved.

“It’s everywhere. But also nowhere.”

“Are you trying to get smart with us?” JJ said with an incensed expression.

“I simply spoke the truth. There’s no other way to save someone who’s seen their doppelgänger and fallen into a coma except to have them drink the blood of the Sacred Ancestor.”

“The blood of the Sacred Ancestor?!”

– Chapter 7, Bedeviled Stagecoach

The Tiger In Winter Quote
A voice came to the Hunter. But whose voice, and from where? Actually, it wasn’t clear that it even was a voice. Though D heard it distinctly, it was impossible to decide whether it came to him through his ears or crept directly into his brain.

"How good of you to come."

“What are you scheming at?” D asked, his voice swallowed up by the darkness.

"My thoughts are all played out. And they have been for a long, long time."

“What are you doing here?”

"Nothing."

“What did you do to the woman who was up there?”

"Nothing. If anything happened to her, it is because she desired it."

“You’re the one who brought her here.”

"I didn’t bring her here. She accompanied me."

“Is this where you dwell?”

"I’m not anywhere. And at the same time, I’m everywhere."

“Why did you come here?”

"I just told you. I am not here. And at the same time, I’m everywhere."

– Chapter 7, The Tiger In Winter

This is further supported by the fact that the Sacred Ancestor had fought The Elder God 10,000 years ago in Fortress Of The Elder God novel where he supposedly stalemated the God for over a year and came out victorious despite the fact the the Elder God is an Omnipresent being himself which would also make the Sacred Ancestor Omnipresent by virtue of Scaling.

To make things more mysterious, the Sacred Ancestor existed prior to the creation of Earth as it was mentioned in White Devil Mountain by Duke Gilzen where the latter stated to D that Nobility is an Ancient Race compared to the Humans or any other beings on Earth.

White Devil Mountain Quote
“This is blood. We Nobles aren’t a new race that suddenly came into being ten thousand years ago. Our origins go back far earlier, to the time of Earth’s creation, making our kind ancient in comparison to the human race. I don’t know if it’s because of that or for some other reason, but at that point in time ten millennia ago, our species was already losing its vitality. Only the finest among us noticed it: myself and him. That is, the Sacred Ancestor. However, he and I took the possibilities of the Nobility in different directions. He tried to create a fusion of human and Noble, while I wished to mix our blood with that of aliens. My experiment had begun with their arrival. And for a while I was successful. Nobles injected with the alien blood I developed exhibited strength unimaginable in our kind.”

– Chapter 3, White Devil Mountain

This hints at the fact that Sacred Ancestor very likely predates the Creation of Earth itself. However, The Sacred Ancestor (or the Nobles) is not a part of any Alien Race as Nobles are described to be beings who are fueled by Supernatural Forces which not even the OSB could analyze despite the latter's ability to process reality within the material realm as stated in Noble V: Greylancer. Moreover, Nobles were stated to be formed of Genes of Darkness belonging to the Night which was still a complete mystery to the Nobles despite their research on them for eons which was stated in Raiser Of Gales. In Scenes From An Unholy War, the Sacred Ancestor was called Darkness itself by Toma who was revived and empowered heavily by the former. Furthermore, in the novella Dark Nocturne, the Sacred Ancestor was heavily implied to be the The Night or Darkness itself when D explains that the mesmerizing song of the nobility and the singer of that song is created by Him aka the Sacred Ancestor.

Noble V: Greylancer Quote
The Nobility stood at a tremendous advantage in the beginning. The OSB’s primary weapon was an atomic blaster capable of incinerating objects, but the Nobility were able to reconstitute their forms after being struck by the sizzle of plasma.

The OSB were thrown into perfect confusion. The way the immortal Nobility were able to rise again from an atomic blast was beyond comprehension—beyond even their concept of regeneration.

Regeneration, as the OSB understood it, signified cell reproduction at the atomic level. Vampire resurrection defied analysis. That the Noble garments, too, rematerialized intact shocked and terrified the OSB. They repeated meticulous tests on capes and rings and various other spoils, only to find that they were made of ordinary silk and cotton. Though the pieces had been specially engineered to restore their shape after experiencing primitive sword and gun damage, they could easily be burned to cinders. Nevertheless, these same items were reconstituted from ash along with their wearers.

It was not until a year later, when—as gleaned from human knowledge—they drove a stake into a Noble’s heart, that the OSB grew wiser to the supernatural forces fueling vampiric existence. Only when they bore witness to the Noble succumbing to death’s call, his flesh along with his garments crumbling to dust, did the OSB finally understand the words—legend, curse, occult, and evil—swirling inside the memories of their human prey.

Though the Nobles were vulnerable to natural sunlight, they were impervious to the artificial light produced by the OSB. Wooden stakes were ineffective unless driven precisely into their hearts. Even if his head were severed at the neck, a vampire could come back from the dead, its head reattached in a matter of seconds. But only if reattached within ten minutes.

Such phenomena were best understood as supernatural rather than physical, but since the OSB were only capable of processing reality within the material realm, these supernatural beings shook the OSB and wreaked havoc with their primitive DNA memory.

– Chapter 1, Noble V: Greylancer

Scenes From An Unholy War Quote
“How can this be?” he asked. “Tell me. Did you not choose me? Or was I just some stupid stone to whet D’s blade? Save me, O darkness! Save me!”

– Chapter 9, Scenes From An Unholy War

Dark Nocturne Quote
D entered the mansion. As he walked down the ancient corridor, he seemed terribly well-suited to the mansion by night. More than anyone else, this young man was a perfect match for decay.

The door to the room was open. The beautiful figure that sat by the window turned to face D.

“A little late, aren’t you?” Price said mockingly. “What are you doing?”

“I’m waiting. For the singer, that is. I, too, grasp the beauty of the night.” Once the youthful warrior had confirmed that D had his eyes shut, his expression became one of amazement.

“And are you going to become a descendant of the night?” asked the Hunter.

“Why would you ask that? You know something after all, don’t you? Once again, I ask you the same question. Why have you come here, D?”

“But that’s not something for the singer to decide,” D continued in a leaden voice.

“Well, who shall decide then?”

“The will of the night—the one who created both the singer and the song.”

“And that would be—?” Price began to ask as he left his place by the window without a sound. His eyes were giving off a red glow.

The seat by the window was reserved for the singer. Price was dumbstruck as he gazed at the woman in the gossamer gown. Particles of light glistened in the folds of her dress.

“I have heard your song,” Price said in an absent-minded tone. “And that’s why I’ve come here. I finally realize that I was summoned.”

But there is need for only one of you, a voice chimed in his head—the voice of a lady. A voice so beautiful it would be impossible to judge what kind of woman she was.

“Then that would be me.”

There is one more. And he will surely come here as well.

“So, who gets to decide?”

The will of the night.

– Chapter 4, Dark Nocturne

Raiser Of Gales Quote
“To be a Noble, most likely, is to live by night,” D began softly, with his longsword in his right hand and a cup of steaming coffee in his left. “The potential power inherent in the darkness of night and the shadowy influence it has on the Nobility down at the very molecular level are mysteries today—even during the Nobility’s golden age of science, they couldn’t begin to unravel them. The question of why the flesh of the Nobility is invincible, the secret of how they can live eternally, ageless and immortal so long as they’re spared from sunlight or a blow from a stake, or the riddle of why that blow has no effect whatsoever unless taken through the heart. It’s nothing if not ironic that they, the first creatures in the history of the world to reach a measure of longevity that could never be surpassed, were anguished as no others by trying to discover the secret of their powers.”

“I wonder if the field of genetic engineering could’ve offered some clues? Although I did hear the information from every possible gene was collated in the Nobility’s computers.”

“The process of decoding the information contained in every single gene was completed more than five thousand years ago. But that’s not where the problem lies. Once they’d discovered the gene that prevented aging, they must have asked themselves why such a gene had come into existence.”

“Where do we come from, where are we going? I guess that remains the eternal question for all of us. Noble and human alike. But what did the power of darkness you just mentioned have to do with any of this?”

D nodded and brought the cup to his mouth. Noticing how Lina smiled, he scowled and took a drink. “Is it any good?” Lina asked in a buoyant tone.

“Yep.”

“I’m glad.”

Clearing his throat, D began to speak again. “It’s common knowledge that the vital functions of the Nobility all center around darkness itself. This gave rise to a certain hypothesis. It suggested that the darkness of night might hold the primary cause of the powers of the Nobility, or the gene responsible, if you will. That is to say, perhaps the Nobility absorbed some ghostly information belonging to the very darkness in the form of this gene, or so the theory went.”

Lina’s eyes were sparkling, shining with the expectation and anxiety held solely by those who wrenched open the heavy door of the unknown and beheld the light of truth spearing freely forth. Sparkling relentlessly.

“That’s the gene of darkness, isn’t it?”

“That’s right.”

“If only we could understand the structure of it, the riddles of the Nobility would be solved. ‘Where do we come from, where are we going?’ And the answers would apply to mankind, too. D, didn’t they ever form this hypothesis—that humans are furnished with the gene of light?”

The moonlight caused their neat profiles to stand out stronger and whiter. The song of the wind, the aroma of grass.

“That’s right,” D said. “To be human is to live in the light. When you consider the length of their respective life spans, humans don’t amount to much when compared to the Nobility. From a physiological standpoint, they’re terribly frail as well. But when you take the potential energy of the race as a whole—”

“Light surpasses darkness,” Lina muttered softly.

Furthermore, The Sacred Ancestor, similar to D, is also completely missing from the Akashic Records which is evident when neither Archduke Lawrence Valcue nor Matthew Dyalhis could read or know about either D or Sacred Ancestor despite having access to the Records which granted the antagonists complete knowledge and control over all of Creation in the VHD verse.

The Sacred Ancestor exists in some realm of Chaos as shown in Twin Shadowed Knights when Mia was lured into his Realm where she met with Clouds of Chaos with the Sacred Ancestor in front of her. When asked where she was, Sacred Ancestor replied that the place she is in is wherever she wishes it to be which Mia thinks to be some form of Zen Riddle. Here's an interesting bit about Chaos is that in the very same Novel, statements from the narrator implies that Chaos predated the Universe and from which the Universe was created. As such, considering the Chaos in the Realm of Sacred Ancestor is the same as the Chaos which narrator states to be the primordial thing from which the Universe was created, it can be construed that the realm of Chaos is something which exists beyond the Universe.

Twin Shadowed Knights Quote
But even as the essence of an ineffable terror stabbed into every inch of her, Mia couldn’t look away.

Chaos began to give way to form. Just like when the universe was created. It was coming. Out of the light—and drawing closer. Heading toward Mia.

– Chapter 2, Twin Shadowed Knights

Twin Shadowed Knights Quote
Mia was in the midst of chaos, but she hadn’t noticed that this was the same chaos D had been in and which she herself had slipped into once before. As she walked through the mysteriously pervasive clouds, she sensed someone or something incredibly huge up ahead. An eerie feeling knifed through her. It was fear—the kind of terror so thick and intense that one misstep might mean she’d never recover from it. However, oddly enough, she wasn’t afraid of that happening, and this frame of mind saved Mia. It was unimaginably deep and cold and, strangest of all, warm. Due to this, Mia didn’t halt.

There’s quite a resemblance, she thought. Although the scale differed so greatly, in some basic respects they were like two peas in a pod. This one and D.

"You’re right, echoed a voice from somewhere, but Mia was neither surprised nor frightened. To the contrary, she let a question slip right out."

"You’re a close relative of D’s, aren’t you?"

"The power of the imagination is a thing to be feared," the voice replied, seeming to laugh. "However, that’s one of the most beautiful things about humans. Because of that power, the human race hasn’t died out, and you have come here."

"Where exactly is “here”?"

"Wherever you’d like it to be. That is actually what this is."

"Sounds just like one of those Zen riddles."

Mia’s grumbling brought a chuckle from the other party.

"It’s been a long time since I’ve heard anyone mention those. I should’ve expected as much from the daughter of Noa Simon."

Matter of fact, In Tyrant's Stars Part 4 when Valcua talks to Kima about how a mysterious being (the Sacred Ancestor) appeared in his dream and offered him a Weapon sealed inside the Extradimensional Dungeon, Valcua talks about how the surroundings in the dream was a complete desolate plain of wasteland from where the being emerged/came from and which not even Valcua wanted to enter into even in his dream. The context implies that surrounding Valcua saw in his dream where the Sacred Ancestor originated from is a completely Empty Realm meaning that the Realm is some form of Non-Existent plane.

Tyrant's Stars Quote
“But I can’t accept that. The Ultimate Noble is fated to be eternally victorious. Kima, there’s something I shall share with you alone.”

“What is it, milord?”

“Something a man told me in a dream. Only in a time of absolute peril will I allow you to make use of a certain weapon. It’s concealed in the far reaches of an extradimensional dungeon, and only when you truly desire it will you receive the key that unlocks it.”

“What is it? And who was this man in your dream?”

“I don’t know either of those things . . . All I know is that it was a man. I get the feeling I saw his face, saw his form, yet I can’t remember anything. Perhaps it was just a dream of a dream. There was just one thing . . .”

“One thing?” Kima said, the words falling hard against his chest.

“Behind him stretched a wasteland—a plain so desolate that in my dream, I felt from the very bottom of my heart I should never want to set foot on it. That was where he’d come from.”

– Chapter 3, Tyrant's Stars - Part 4

Therefore, it can be safely established that the Sacred Ancestor is a conceptually non-existent formless higher dimensional being who is omnipresent and who very likely precedes the material universe while existing in some dimension of Chaos. From the given information so far, The Sacred Ancestor can be stated to be the Primordial Darkness itself with dark demonic attributes that opposes the Holy and the Divine nature of God which is why Nobles, like Demons, are extremely vulnerable to things like the Holy Cross, Holy Water, Natural Sunlight, and so on.

Powers and Abiilities

When it comes to powers and abilities, the Sacred Ancestor is a complete beast and a god-tier within the series that puts him above the entire verse with the only exception being EoS D. In terms of Raw power, the Sacred Ancestor is massively above anyone else in the series as of the current novel. This puts him way above the likes of any Noble (such as Lord Vlad Balazs, Lawrence Valcua, Duke Gilzen, Grand Duke Drago, Grand Duke Bergenzy, Noble Greylancer, etc), their accursed experiments (The Destroyer, Big Bang Accelerator, etc), the gods shown so far (such as The Elder God) as well as even D himself. As such, he is safely Universal+ in power. In terms of Haxes or Abilities, the Sacred Ancestor is extremely Broken. Not only does he possess all the powers of the nobles as well as resistances to them due to being their progenitor and bestowing them with powers, he also has powers and resistances of D as well as resistances to his powers as well. This was shown when he eternally stalemates D in Armageddon.

Conclusion

So Tl;Dr

  • The Sacred Ancestor's physical appearances & forms are just avatars of his true form
  • The Sacred Ancestor's true form is a formless presence
  • The Sacred Ancestor is a Conceptually Non-existent Omnipresent being that predates the Universe
  • The Sacred Ancestor is the Darkness/Night itself
  • The Sacred Ancestor is missing from the Akashic Records
  • The Sacred Ancestor is a God tier within the verse reaching up to Universal+ tier on his own
  • The Sacred Ancestor is extremely broken possessing all the haxes and resistances of the Nobles including D himself while himself being resistant to their powers

One thing to be noted here is that Hideyuki Kikuchi's works are heavily influenced by H.P. Lovecraft's works with the VHD series itself incorporating tons of Lovecraftian elements in the series such as the mutants and demonic monsters, the supernatural existence of Nobles, the Elder God or Clulu (Cthulu), the dimensions and realms resembling Eldritch spaces, and many more. As such, it is highly probable that the author wrote Sacred Ancestor as an Eldritch Abomination within the series which makes sense as to why the God of Nobility is not just a simple Vampire seen commonly in fictional series but rather a seemingly God like dark entity.
